Post Graduation Work Permit

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program allows international students who have completed eligible programs of study in Canada to gain valuable Canadian work experience after graduation.

What is a PGWP?

  • A PGWP is an open work permit. This means you can work for any employer in Canada and change jobs without restrictions.

  • The permit is issued only once in a lifetime. If you apply and receive a PGWP, you cannot apply again later, even if you return for another program.

  • The length of the PGWP depends on the duration of your study program, up to a maximum of 3 years.

Who is Eligible for a PGWP?

You may be eligible for a PGWP if you:

  1. Completed a program of study at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada.

  2. Studied in an academic, vocational, or professional training program that was at least 8 months long and led to a degree, diploma, or certificate.

  3. Maintained full-time student status in Canada during every academic session of your program (with limited exceptions, such as authorized leave or part-time status in the final semester).

  4. Received an official transcript and an official letter from your DLI confirming program completion.

Programs That Qualify

Your program must:

  • Be at least 8 months in duration.

  • Lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate.

  • Be offered by a recognized DLI.

Duration of PGWP:

  • If your program was 8 months to less than 2 years: PGWP is valid for up to the same length as your study program.

  • If your program was 2 years or longer: PGWP may be valid for up to 3 years.

  • If you completed more than one eligible program: You may combine their length, as long as each is at least 8 months.

When You’re Not Eligible

You are not eligible for a PGWP if you:

  • Studied in a program that was less than 8 months.

  • Studied only English or French as a second language (ESL/FSL).

  • Took general interest or self-improvement courses.

  • Received funding from Global Affairs Canada (GAC) under certain programs.

  • Already received a PGWP before.

  • Completed your studies at a non-eligible private institution.

Application Timing

  • You must apply for a PGWP within 180 days of receiving written confirmation from your DLI (such as your transcript or completion letter).

  • At the time you apply, you must have a valid study permit or have been authorized to study in Canada.

  • If your study permit will expire before you get proof of graduation, you can either:

    • Apply for a visitor record to stay in Canada legally, or

    • Leave Canada and apply for your PGWP from abroad.

Working While Waiting for a PGWP

If you were eligible to work off-campus during your studies and you apply for a PGWP before your study permit expires, you may:

  • Work full-time while waiting for a decision, without needing another work permit.

Why PGWP is Important

  • Canadian work experience gained under a PGWP can help you qualify for permanent residence through programs like:

    • Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry.

    • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

    • Other PR pathways that value Canadian education and work experience.
